Golden-hour family portraits on the quietest stretch of sugar-white sand on the Gulf Coast. Unhurried sessions, real laughter, and light you cannot fake.
I am Amber, and I have been photographing families on Navarre Beach since 2016. Most of my sessions happen at Sand Dollar Pavilion in the hour before sunset, when the sand goes warm and the crowds have thinned. Why Navarre Beach
Navarre Beach is the calm one. Pensacola Beach and Destin get the crowds and the high-rises; Navarre kept its dunes, its boardwalk crossovers and its quiet. For photographs that matters more than people expect. Fewer strangers wandering through the background, more open sand to work with, and a horizon that stays clean all the way out.
The sand here is startlingly white, which does something lovely to light in the evening. It bounces upward and fills in shadows under eyes and chins, so nobody ends up squinting into a hard sun. It is the reason beach portraits from this stretch of coast look softer than they have any right to.
Where we meet
My default location is Sand Dollar Pavilion on Navarre Beach. There is public parking, a boardwalk over the dunes so nobody has to scramble through soft sand carrying a toddler, and restrooms nearby, which matters more than you think when small children are involved.
From the pavilion we usually walk a short way along the shoreline to find open sand away from foot traffic. If you have somewhere on the island that means something to your family, tell me and we will use it instead. I photograph all along the Emerald Coast, from Navarre and Navarre Beach to Gulf Breeze, Pensacola Beach, Holley, Fort Walton Beach and Pace.
The best time of day for beach photos in Navarre
Golden hour, and it is not close. The hour before sunset gives you low, warm, forgiving light, and it is when I schedule nearly every session. Midday sun on white sand is the hardest light there is; it carves shadows under everyone’s eyes and makes children squint through every frame.
Blue hour, the twenty or so minutes after the sun drops below the horizon, is the other one worth asking about. The light turns cool and even, the sky holds colour, and the beach empties out. It photographs beautifully and it is a lovely option if your family does well later in the evening.
Sunset moves through the year here, so the right start time in June is nothing like the right start time in November. When you book I will tell you exactly what time to arrive for your date, and I will build in a buffer, because the light does not wait.
What to wear
The families who look most like themselves in their photographs are the ones who dressed comfortably and did not overthink it. A few things genuinely help:
Choose a palette, not a uniform. Two or three soft colours that sit near each other work far better than everyone in matching white shirts. Creams, sand, sage, dusty blue and warm neutrals all sit beautifully against this coastline.
Let something move. Flowing dresses, loose linen and long skirts catch the Gulf breeze and give photographs life. Stiff, structured clothing tends to look stiff in pictures.
Skip bold logos and tight patterns. They pull the eye straight off faces.
Go barefoot. Everyone always ends up barefoot anyway. Plan for it.
Dress children for the actual weather. A cold, itchy or overheated child is the fastest way to lose a session, and no outfit is worth it.
What a session actually looks like
You will never be left standing there wondering what to do with your hands. I direct throughout the session: where to stand, how to turn, where the light is falling, what to do with your arms. Every session includes properly posed portraits, the ones you frame and send to grandparents, and I pose those carefully and tell you exactly how.
Then I loosen it. Between the setups I give your family something easy to do together and let it play out. Walk down the shoreline. Pick your youngest up. Tell a joke at someone’s expense. That is where the candid frames come from, and they are often the ones you end up loving most.
You get both in the same hour. Polished, directed portraits where everyone is looking and lit properly, and the unguarded in-between moments that actually look like your family. You should never have to choose between the two.
Small children are not a problem to be managed. They run, they dig, they refuse to look at me, and the pictures are better for it. If your toddler has a meltdown we will stop, let it pass, and carry on. I have never once had a session ruined by a child behaving like a child.
Weather on the Gulf does what it likes. If a storm rolls in we reschedule, no argument and no fee. Overcast is not a reason to cancel; soft grey light over this beach is quietly gorgeous.
Sessions I offer on Navarre Beach
Family sessions are the bulk of my work, from young families to extended groups with grandparents in from out of state. Vacation weeks fill early.
Maternity sessions on the beach at golden hour, usually somewhere between 30 and 36 weeks.
Newborn sessions are in-home lifestyle only. I come to you, in your own light, with your own things around you. I do not do posed studio setups with props.
Senior portraits for high school seniors who want something that looks like them rather than like a yearbook.
Couples, engagements, proposals and elopements. If you are planning a surprise on the beach, tell me and we will work out the logistics quietly.
Booking and pricing
A $100 retainer reserves your date and comes off your session total. Golden-hour dates through spring break and the summer go quickly, and holiday minis go quickest of all, so it is worth reaching out earlier than feels necessary.
